FACTORS AFFECTING FERTILITY

Becoming parents is a dream of every couple but at the same time achieving this has become a great challenge due to increase in the infertility rate.

The urgency to seek medical attention hinges on 3 factors, as a simple ‘rule-of-thumb’.

  • The age of the woman
    This is the most important factor that affects fertility in a woman. Fertility is fairly good until the age of 35 years. Thereafter, studies has shown a gradual decrease in the fertility rates. Beyond the age of 40 years there is pro found drop in fertility rate.
  • It is therefore advisable that women who are reaching the age of 35 and who have failed to conceive, to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

The length of time trying to conceive

Couples with no detectable causes for infertility with regular unprotected intercourse for a duration of 1 year should be able to conceive naturally. Couples would be advised to seek medical attention if there is delay for more than 2 years.

Medical Problems

Chronic illnesses like uncontrolled diabetics mellitus, chronic renal failure, hormonal disorder may have detrimental effects on fertility, so hence advised to seek medical help early
